"In pursuit of excellence" is a good way to describe what Laingsburg Volleyball is all about. We strive to clearly define expectations, how we can reach them, and hold each other accountable for the daily choices necessary to get there. We want this to be an opportunity to teach and allow athletes to practice being great teammates, great players and great teams.
Our goal is for athletes to set high expectations for themselves, their team and work to hold each other to them. Success is defined, not by wins and losses, but by whether each opportunity to learn and grow as a person, player and team was utilized to the fullest.
While we work to master the basic skills of the sport and reach an ever changing higher standard of play, ultimately the experience is meant to teach us even greater life lessons such as:
- developing a strong work ethic
- tackling challenges in a positive manner
- pursuing goals
- developing working relationships
- viewing mistakes as an opportunity to learn and grow
- leadership skills
- serving as mentors and role models
With that as our yardstick, as we meet our expectations and achieve our goals, wins follow. Over the past ten years, our program has progressed from the bottom of the league to consistently finishing in at the top. In 2007-2008, we made school history and hung the first CMAC League Championship and District Championship banners and repeated those accomplishments again in the 2008-09 seasons. As representatives of their team success, we have had numerous players named all-league, all-regions and all-state. In addition, several girls have also had the opportunity to continue their volleyball careers at the collegiate level.
Youth Development Program
Our program begins at the Elementary school with a youth development program conducted during the Varsity season. The Varsity players meet with elementary girls prior to selected games, run skill stations and then get an opportunity to interact with the young players while enjoying a snack. Those young players are then invited to the Varsity match where they are paired up with JV and 9th grade players to watch the skills they practiced in action.
Paw Power Program
We also run the Paw Power program to provide players Elementary thru 6th grade players with the opportunity to take part in competitions with other schools. The high school girls have the opportunity to participate as coaches and further their learning through teaching.
Varsity kicks off its season each year with Team Day, as it has come to be called. One of the first practices of the year is replaced by an opportunity for the girls to take part in activities aimed at team bonding and developing leadership skills. For part of the day, the last few years the girls have participated in team initiatives and leadership training through an area YMCA program.
